Exploring Reykjavík in a car

Exploring Reykjavík

If you’re exploring Iceland by car, one destination that you’ll want to put on your list is Reykjavík, the capital of the country. Reykjavík is a vivacious, young, and culture-filled city that offers plenty to see and do.
Here are a few must-see attractions that you’ll want to visit before heading off to the next city.

Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja is one of the most notable buildings in the city's skyline and is a true expression of the local culture.

Hallgrímskirkja is a beautiful church, marked by its 74.5-metre-high tower.

The cascading columns give the impression of a rocket heading into space.

Inside the church, you'll find a 25-ton, 15-metre-high organ, created by Johannes Klais.

If you're feeling daring, you can head up the tower and take in amazing views of the capital.

National Museum of Iceland

Learn the history of Iceland, starting all the way back in 1863. The National Museum of Iceland has artefacts that are more than 1,200 years old. One of the most notable artefacts in the museum is the Valþjófsstaður door, though there are more than 2,000 artefacts in total.

The museum also houses a Nordic ship, church ornaments, and other historical items. The National Museum of Iceland offers guided tours as well as culture nights.

Tjörnin

Tjörnin is located in the centre of the city and offers charming water views. Be prepared to be greeted by geese, swans, and ducks! Surrounding the banks of Tjörnin are trees, flowerbeds, and painted homes. In the summer, this is the ideal place to soak in the views while, in the winter, it's a hot-spot for ice skating.

Nearby the pond, you'll find City Hall, the Supreme Court, the National Theatre, and other landmarks.

Dine at the Perlan

Enjoy meals with a view at the Perlan. This glass-domed fine dining restaurant is the perfect way to start or end a day of adventuring. This futuristic revolving glass restaurant is located in the middle of a park, offering 360° views of the ocean, mountains, and the city.

Take in these breathtaking views all while eating amazing local food. Please your taste buds with locally crafted sandwiches, soups, pastries, and coffee, as well as delicious entrees such as steamed cod, lamb chops, and more. The bistro-style restaurant has a relaxed yet lively atmosphere, making it the ideal place to eat a meal for a family or for a couple. All of the food is made with seasonal and high-quality ingredients.

The Sun Voyager

The Sun Voyager is located next to Sæbraut road in Reykjavík, Iceland. The sculpture is made out of stainless steel and is set on granite, giving a striking contrast to the blue water that it sits in front of. The Sun Voyager stands 9m x 7m x 18m.

The sculpture was created in 1990 and is an ode to the sun. Designed by Jón Gunnar Árnason, the sculpture conveys many messages, including progress, freedom, the dream of hope, and the promise of undiscovered territory.
