Nissan X-Trail 4WD – Rent an Automatic SUV in Iceland
The Nissan X-Trail is one of the most capable and comfortable mid-size SUVs you can hire in Iceland. With intelligent 4WD, a fuel-efficient hybrid/petrol engine, and F-road approval, it handles everything from the Ring Road to the Highland interior — in any season. Pick up from Keflavik Airport and head straight into Iceland's wild landscapes, fully equipped and ready to go.
Why the Nissan X-Trail is Perfect for Iceland
Iceland doesn't forgive an underpowered car. Between the unpredictable weather, river crossings on highland tracks, loose gravel on the Ring Road, and black ice in winter, you need a vehicle that's genuinely built for the conditions — not just a small hatchback dressed up as an SUV.
The Nissan X-Trail delivers where it counts. Its intelligent all-wheel drive system distributes torque automatically between the front and rear axles, giving you confident traction on loose gravel, wet mountain roads, and snow-packed surfaces. Combined with its automatic transmission, driving in Iceland becomes intuitive and stress-free — even on unfamiliar roads.
As a newer model, the X-Trail also brings modern driver-assistance features, a well-insulated cabin, and genuinely comfortable seating for up to five passengers, making it equally at home on long Ring Road stretches and technical highland routes.
F-Road Approved — Explore Iceland's Highlands
The Nissan X-Trail is approved for driving on F-roads (excluding F249 Þórsmörk), making it one of the more versatile mid-size SUVs in our fleet. F-roads are Iceland's unpaved highland tracks — rough, remote, and often involving shallow river crossings. They're only open during summer (typically late June through early September), and they require a vehicle that's been specifically cleared for that use.
Fuel Efficiency Without Sacrificing Power
Iceland is a large country. A full Ring Road circuit is around 1,300 km, and any detour into the Westfjords or Highlands will add considerably more. Fuel costs add up quickly.
The X-Trail's hybrid/petrol engine is one of the most fuel-efficient powertrains available in a proper 4WD SUV. You'll spend less at the pump without giving up the performance and ground clearance you need for Iceland's variable roads. On long highway stretches, the hybrid system recovers energy during braking and deceleration, keeping consumption lower than a traditional petrol-only SUV of the same size.
